Pulling on a state shirt gives young hockey players a chance to meet new teammates, test their skills against teams from across Australia and experience a full week of representative hockey. The Under 14 national championships bring those opportunities together, with plenty to learn between the first whistle and the final match.

For Greensborough junior Manroop Singh, the 2026 championships included 11 games and five goals for Victoria Development. The tournament ran from 4 to 10 October at EPC Solar Hockey Stadium in Canberra.

Manroop’s five-goal national campaign

Manroop Singh — player, #28, Victoria Development.

Manroop appeared in every game and finished as Victoria Development’s leading goalscorer. His five goals comprised two field goals and three penalty strokes, contributing five of the team’s 13 goals across the week.

He scored twice in the 3–2 loss to South Australia on the opening day. He then added a penalty stroke against New South Wales State and another in the 4–0 win over Tasmania. His field goal against Territory Stingers secured Victoria Development’s 1–0 victory.

Those contributions followed Manroop’s selection in the Victorian development team, which the club celebrated earlier in the season.

Victoria Development: tenth place

Victoria Development finished tenth of 12 teams, with two wins and nine losses. The wins came against Tasmania and Territory Stingers.

The final placing tells only part of the campaign. Five defeats were by a single goal, including matches against South Australia, New South Wales State, Queensland Cutters and Queensland Sabres. The team also pushed Victoria in its last match on 10 October, losing 2–1.

That final game completed the development team’s round-robin schedule.

Congratulations from the Burra

Congratulations to Manroop on representing Victoria Development and making a strong scoring contribution at his national championships. Thank you to the families, coaches and team staff who support young players through these opportunities.

For other Burra juniors, representative hockey is one possible part of a wider journey. Enjoying the game, building skills and contributing to a team remain important at every level. Families can explore junior club hockey at Greensborough.
