What is Hockey?
Hockey is a fast, skilful team sport played with a stick and ball.
At Greensborough Hockey Club, players of different ages and experience levels can take part through starter programs, junior teams, senior teams, masters hockey and social or development opportunities.
This page gives a simple introduction for families, new players and anyone thinking about trying hockey for the first time.
How the game works
Hockey is played by two teams. Players use a hockey stick to pass, carry, control and shoot the ball.
The aim is to move the ball into the attacking circle and score by hitting, pushing or deflecting the ball into the goal.
Players pass, receive, run, defend, tackle and work together to create scoring opportunities.
What makes hockey different?
Hockey is a game of movement, decision-making and teamwork.
Players need to learn how to control the ball, scan the field, support teammates, defend safely and make quick decisions under pressure.
For younger and newer players, the focus is on learning the basics, building confidence and enjoying the game.
Is hockey suitable for beginners?
Yes. Hockey can be learned step by step.
New players do not need to know everything before they start. The club has programs and teams for different ages, experience levels and confidence levels.
Younger children often begin through the Saturday Morning Starter Program. Older juniors and adults may be able to start through junior club competition, senior development teams or other suitable playing options.
What equipment do players need?
Players need a hockey stick, mouthguard, shin guards and suitable footwear.
Goalkeepers use specialist protective equipment. New goalkeepers should contact the club before attending so equipment options can be discussed.
