Junior State Championships – North East Metro Red Devils

What is the JSC?

The Junior State Championship, often referred to as the JSC, is one of the major junior hockey events in Victoria.

The event brings together representative teams across the Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 boys’ and girls’ age groups. It has been a regular highlight of the Victorian hockey calendar for many years and provides junior players with the opportunity to compete in a higher-level tournament environment.

Greensborough Hockey Club players may have the opportunity to represent the North East Metro Red Devils, depending on age group, eligibility, selection and the relevant Hockey Victoria process.

How JSC fits into the Hockey Victoria pathway

JSC is a zone representative opportunity. For Under 14 athletes, Hockey Victoria currently uses JSC as an Academy identification and assessment pathway. Other athletes may enter the high-performance pathway through Hockey Victoria processes such as Draft Camp or an Open Player Assessment, depending on age group and the current season.

Hockey Victoria manages Academy and State Team nomination, assessment and selection. Athletes seeking State Team selection must follow Hockey Victoria’s current nomination and assessment process; Greensborough Hockey Club does not control or guarantee external selection.

What is the Hockey Victoria Academy?

The HV Academy is Hockey Victoria’s development program for selected young athletes who aspire to progress in its high-performance pathway. It is separate from a GHC team place and from playing for a JSC zone team. Selection into the Academy is managed by HV.

HV describes Academy entry through the previous year’s State Team or identification at Draft Camp; for Under 14 athletes, its current pathway uses assessment at the Under 14 JSC. Participation in JSC alone does not mean Academy selection. Check HV’s Academy Program page for the pathway applicable to the player’s age and season.

Academy and State Team selection are different steps

An Academy place does not itself select a player for a State Team. A player seeking State Team consideration must follow HV’s separate nomination and assessment process. HV also describes an Open Player Assessment route for eligible athletes outside the Academy. Use HV’s registrations and nominations page to check the current process; some dates shown there may relate to an earlier season.
