Junior Competitions – home & away

The club participates in a competition is run by Hockey Victoria.

Hockey is a winter sport played in a ‘home and away’ format with a ‘top 4’ finals format (under 12 and above).

Age Groups

The age groups for junior are based on the players age as at 1 January in the year prior to the competition, e.g. age groups for the 2020 competition is be based on the players age as at 1 January 2020:

  • Under 10 – Born in 2010 or later
  • Under 12 – Born in 2008 or 2009
  • Under 14 – Born in 2006 or 2007
  • Under 16 – Born in 2004 or 2005
  • Under 18 – Born in 2002 or 2003

Some children may play in an age group older than they are qualified, this is at the discretion of the junior committee.

When are the games played

The under 14 and under 16 games and under 18 are played on a Friday evening. The aim is that no game starts prior to 6.30, or starts later than 9pm, although there can be exceptions. The under 14 games generally will play earlier, and the under 16 games later, with the Under 18 game starting after the lower age groups are finished.

The under 10 and under 12 games play on a Saturday morning. Generally the under 12 games play first, generally starting between 8.30 and 10.30, with the under 10 games somewhere between 10.30 and 11.30.

How long are the games?

The under 14, under 16 and under 18 games consist of 2 x 30 minute halves, with a 5 minute half time. The under 12 consist of 2×25 minute halves with 5 minute half time, and the under 10 half field is 2 x 20 minute halves with 5 minute half time.

Before a player can play in the competition they must register with Hockey Victoria and with the Greensborough Hockey club and pay fees due.

Hockey Victoria Registration

All Victorian hockey participants must register online and make an Individual Registration payment for the following fees:

  • Hockey Victoria Individual Membership for outdoor competitions
  • Hockey Australia Levy
  • Personal Accident Insurance

Greensborough Hockey Club Registration

Register online to play juniors with the Greensborough Hockey Club, fees payable to the Greensborough Hockey club cover the following:

  • Training
  • Team coaching one session per week and match day
  • Equipment used at training and on match days 
  • Umpires on match days
