Junior Club Competition
Junior Club Competition is for children who are ready to play regular club hockey in Hockey Victoria competitions. Teams play against other clubs in their grade through a home-and-away season, with Under 12 games played on Saturday mornings and older junior age groups playing on Friday nights.
This is the next step after the Saturday Morning Starter Program, although children can also join Junior Club Competition directly if they are ready for team hockey. The program is suitable for players who want regular training, weekend games, team placement and a season-long club competition experience.
If you are not sure whether your child should start in Saturday Morning Hockey or Junior Club Competition, contact the club before registering.
Who this is for
Junior Club Competition is usually suitable for players who:
- are ready to play in a team competition
- can attend regular training and weekend games
- are comfortable learning hockey in a more structured environment
- want to play against other clubs
- are moving on from the Saturday Morning Starter Program or another introductory hockey program
- have played hockey before and are joining or returning to Greensborough
You do not need to know the right age group or team before making an enquiry. The club can help place players in the most suitable pathway.
Age groups
Junior teams are organised by age group under Hockey Victoria competition rules.
For the 2026 season, age groups are based on the player’s age as at 1 January 2026.
The usual junior age groups are:
- Under 12
- Under 14
- Under 16
- Under 18
Some players may be eligible for more than one pathway depending on their age, experience, confidence and team availability. The club will help guide families where there is uncertainty.
Training
Junior Club Competition players usually train during the week with their team or age group.
Training is where players build their hockey skills, learn team concepts, develop confidence and prepare for games. Regular attendance helps players settle into their team and supports their development across the season.
Training details are confirmed by the club once teams, coaches and competition arrangements are finalised.
Game days
Junior Club Competition games are played against other clubs in the same grade on a home-and-away basis.
This means teams play a regular season fixture against the other clubs in their competition grade. Some games are played at Greensborough, while others are played at opposition club venues.
Under 12 games are played on Saturday mornings.
Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 games are played on Friday nights.
Game times, venues and opponents are confirmed through the Hockey Victoria fixture once the season draw is released.
Registration and fees
Junior Club Competition players need to complete the required Hockey Victoria registration and pay the relevant Greensborough Hockey Club playing fee.
There are two separate steps:
The club fees page explains the current playing fee options and which fee applies to junior players.
Equipment
Junior players need basic hockey equipment before playing.
This usually includes:
- hockey stick
- mouthguard
- shin guards
- suitable shoes
- club playing uniform once placed in a team
New families do not need to buy everything before asking questions. The club can help explain what is needed immediately and what can wait until the player is confirmed in a team.
Team placement
The club places junior players into teams based on age group, experience, player numbers, team balance and competition requirements.
The aim is to place players where they can participate safely, develop their skills and contribute to a positive team environment.
Some players may be placed in a team quickly. Others may need a conversation with the junior coordinator or coach before the best option is confirmed.
Not sure where to start?
If your child is new to hockey, returning after time away, or moving from Saturday Morning Hockey into club competition, it is normal to have questions.
The club can help you work out:
- whether Junior Club Competition is the right starting point
- which age group applies
- what training and game commitments are involved
- what registration steps are needed
- what equipment your child needs
- who to contact before the season begins
