Junior Teams Overview

Junior Teams Overview

Greensborough Hockey Club provides junior teams for players moving through the club competition pathway.

Junior teams give players the opportunity to train, play regular matches, develop their hockey skills, learn the game, build friendships and represent the club against other Hockey Victoria clubs.

This page is for families looking for information about junior teams, training, competition and player pathways.

Who junior teams are for

Junior teams are generally for players in the Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 age groups.

Players may be:

  • moving on from the Saturday Morning Starter Program
  • continuing from a previous junior team
  • joining from another club
  • returning to hockey after time away
  • starting club competition for the first time

If you are unsure whether junior club competition is the right next step, contact the club and we can help guide you.

Junior Club Competition

Junior teams play in Hockey Victoria club competition.

Teams play against other clubs in their grade on a home-and-away basis. This means games may be played at Greensborough or at other club venues during the season.

Under 12 games are usually played on Saturday mornings.

Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 games are usually played on Friday nights.

Junior Training

Junior training helps players develop skills, confidence, game understanding and teamwork.

Training expectations vary depending on the age group, team and level of competition. Players are encouraged to attend training regularly where possible, because training helps with skill development, team connection and match preparation.

Team placement

Junior team placement depends on several factors, including age group, experience, ability, player numbers, team balance and competition requirements.

The club aims to place players in teams where they can contribute, develop and enjoy their hockey.

For new players, the first step is to contact the club so we can understand the player’s age, experience and previous hockey background.

Moving from Saturday Morning Hockey

The Saturday Morning Starter Program helps younger players build confidence, movement, basic hockey skills and enjoyment.

When players are ready, they may move into Junior Club Competition. This transition does not need to happen at the same time for every player. Readiness depends on age, confidence, experience, interest and the type of hockey the player wants to try next.

Junior State Championship / Red Devils

Some junior players may also be interested in representative or pathway opportunities such as the Junior State Championship and Red Devils program.

These opportunities sit outside normal club competition and may involve separate selection, training, nomination or registration processes.

New junior players

New junior players are welcome at Greensborough Hockey Club.

If your child is interested in joining a junior team, the club can help explain the right starting point, registration steps, training, match days, fees and equipment.
