What Happens at Your First Hockey Session?

Trying hockey for the first time can feel easier when you know what the session may look like. At Greensborough Hockey Club, the first step is about feeling welcome, having a go and discovering whether hockey suits you.

Before you arrive

Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move, bring water and arrive with enough time to find the club and get settled. If you are unsure what equipment you need, contact the club before your first session.

Beginners should not feel they need to understand every rule or buy a complete kit before trying hockey.

Meeting the coach and group

A coach or club volunteer can help you understand where to go and what will happen. You may meet other new players as well as people who have already played hockey.

It is normal for a first session to include players with different levels of experience. Coaches can adjust explanations and activities so people can learn progressively.

Learning the first skills

Your first session may include holding the stick, moving the ball, passing, changing direction and taking part in simple games or activities. You do not need to perform everything perfectly.

Listen to the instructions, ask questions when you need help and focus on one skill at a time. Confidence usually grows through repeated opportunities to try.

Finding out whether hockey suits you

You do not have to decide everything after one session. Some people enjoy hockey immediately, while others need a few sessions to become comfortable with the equipment, movement and team environment.

The club can help you understand the participation options available, whether you are interested in junior, senior, women’s, Masters, social or recreational hockey.

Your next step

If you are thinking about trying hockey at Greensborough Hockey Club, contact the club and ask what first-session option is most suitable for you or your child.
