Volunteer Position Spotlight: Canteen Support at Burra

Greensborough Hockey Club relies on volunteers to keep club life running, and canteen support is one of the most practical ways to help. It is a hands-on contribution that supports players, families and supporters while helping spread the workload across more people.

You do not need to take on the whole canteen, join the committee or become responsible for every trading day. Canteen support can be a defined task or service window completed under the direction of the authorised canteen coordinator or game-day owner.

What is a Canteen Support Volunteer?

A Canteen Support Volunteer helps with routine canteen activity that has been clearly assigned and explained. The exact work can vary depending on the day, event and service area, so volunteers should only perform tasks they have been briefed and authorised to do.

The purpose of the position is simple: help the canteen provide an organised and welcoming service without expecting a small number of people to do everything themselves.

What might the position involve?

Depending on the activity and the instructions for that shift, canteen support can include:

  • serving players, families and supporters at the canteen counter
  • using the approved point-of-sale or payment process when authorised and briefed
  • helping replenish routine service stock from approved on-site supplies
  • assisting with hot drinks, BBQ or another service area when it is operating
  • keeping the immediate work area clean and orderly
  • helping with a simple end-of-service clean-up or handover
  • letting the canteen coordinator know when stock, equipment, safety or service issues need attention

Not every shift includes every task. A volunteer may be asked to cover only one part of the operation.

What are you not expected to do?

Canteen support is designed to be bounded. Unless separately authorised for another role, a volunteer is not expected to:

  • run the whole canteen or manage every volunteer
  • make purchasing, supplier or budget decisions
  • change prices or make broader financial decisions
  • complete banking or financial reconciliation
  • make food-safety, equipment or compliance decisions outside the instructions provided
  • solve problems that should be referred to the authorised canteen or club operations owner

If something is unclear or outside the task you have been given, the right response is to ask or hand the issue back rather than guess.

Who might this position suit?

Canteen support can suit members, parents, family members and supporters who prefer practical work and enjoy contributing in a team environment. It can be a useful starting point for someone who wants to help but does not want to begin with a large committee or administrative responsibility.

Some canteen tasks are linked to games or events, while others may be organised differently. The club can help explain what opportunities are currently available and whether they fit your availability.

Why does this position matter?

A well-supported canteen improves the experience of people spending time at Burra. It also helps make volunteering more sustainable by spreading routine work across more people instead of relying repeatedly on the same small group.

Even a bounded contribution can be valuable. When more people take on manageable pieces of work, coordinators can spend more time organising the operation rather than filling every gap themselves.
