GHC recycling program turns eligible bottles and cans into practical support for Greensborough Hockey Club. What started as a simple idea is becoming an established part of how the Burra operates.
Labelled recycling bins are now positioned around the clubhouse. Members can place eligible containers in them for return through Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme. The refunds come back to GHC.
The program is coordinated by Craig Allan. Matthew Allan helps collect containers from the recycling bins around the club.
GHC recycling program: how it works
Members may already have noticed the labelled recycling bins inside and outside the clubhouse.
Members can place eligible plastic and glass drink containers in these bins. The club then collects them for return through the Container Deposit Scheme.
Each eligible container is worth 10 cents. The proceeds go back into the GHC bank account.
Those small refunds are already adding up. For the ten months to 31 August 2026, GHC recorded $396.30 in Container Deposit Scheme revenue. That equals 3,963 eligible-container refunds directed back to the club.

How members can support recycling at home
The next stage of the GHC recycling program can extend beyond the club. Members do not need to wait until they are at GHC to contribute.
Families, players and supporters can collect eligible 10-cent containers at home. They can then take them to a participating refund point.

GHC recycling program: where it goes next
The next stage is not about creating a complicated club program. Instead, it is about making a simple habit easier for more people to follow.
The opportunity is to build on what Craig, Matthew and participating members have already established by:
- continuing to make the recycling bins around the clubhouse easy to identify and use;
- encouraging more members and families to collect eligible containers at home;
- making the GHC barcode easy to find whenever people need it;
- tracking the number of refunds and the money returned to the club; and
- periodically showing members what their combined contribution has achieved.
Over time, the Container Deposit Scheme could become a normal part of club life. Members can support the environment and GHC through a simple everyday habit.
The goal does not need to be a particular dollar figure. Success means more people participate, more eligible containers are recycled and volunteers can maintain the program easily.
A small contribution that becomes a club effort
Community clubs are built on hundreds of small contributions.
Sometimes that means coaching a team, helping in the canteen or volunteering at GHC. In this case, it can mean putting a bottle in the right bin or directing a home container refund back to the Burra.
