What Comes After Beginner Hockey? Moving Into a GHC Junior Team

Starting hockey and joining a junior team are not the same step, and children do not all need to move through the pathway at the same pace.

At Greensborough Hockey Club, the Saturday Morning Starter Program gives younger players a welcoming place to build confidence, movement, basic skills and enjoyment. When a player is ready for the next stage, junior club competition provides regular team training and matches against other clubs.

When is a player ready for junior club competition?

There is no single age or moment that automatically decides the transition. Readiness can depend on age group, confidence, experience, interest, player numbers and the type of hockey the child wants to play.

The club's Junior Teams Overview explains that junior teams are generally for Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 players. Players may be moving on from Saturday Morning Hockey, continuing from another junior team, joining from another club or returning after time away.

What changes when a player joins a junior team?

Junior club competition introduces a more regular team environment. Players train with their team, play scheduled home-and-away matches and continue developing skills, confidence, teamwork and game understanding.

The Junior Club Competition page explains the competition pathway, while the Junior Training page provides the current training information.

What if my child is enjoying beginner hockey but is not ready yet?

That is completely reasonable. The purpose of the starter program is to help children begin hockey in a way that feels welcoming and manageable. Progress should not be rushed simply because another player of a similar age has moved on.

You can keep using the Saturday Morning Hockey Program while asking the club what the next step might look like.

New to GHC but already have hockey experience?

You do not need to start in the beginner program if junior club competition is already the more suitable pathway. The club can help work out the right starting point based on the player's age and previous experience.

Ask before you guess

If you are unsure whether your child should remain in the starter program or move into junior club competition, use the Register or Ask a Question pathway.

Tell the club the player's age, previous hockey experience and what they are currently comfortable doing. That is enough to begin a useful conversation about the next step.
