The Role

The role Junior Development Coordinator is especially important as the future success of the club depends on a successful junior program where all players can play hockey at whatever level they are striving to achieve.

Greensborough Hockey Club is committed to not just developing players but also supporting and developing future coaches. The program will be structured to recognise different levels of coaching experience.

  • new coaches who have never coached previously including parents
  • coaches with some experience but need to broaden their range of skills
  • highly experienced coaches interested in fine tuning their coaching skills

The Role

Responsible for overseeing the Junior Development Academy and working with the Director Hockey Operations to identify appropriately skilled group leaders to deliver the development programs.

  • Junior talent identification and performance improvement strategies
  • Develop a junior skills assessment program with the Director Hockey Operations
  • Undertake group and individual skills development
  • Support junior coaches and teams
  • Ensuring all players and coaches wanting to improve their coaching skills can access appropriate education programs
  • Reports to the Director of Hockey Operations

Knowledge

To successfully undertake the role they should:

  • Be well informed of all club activities, especially those of all sub committees
  • A good understanding of how to create and foster a positive work environment
  • Communicate clearly with parents, players and club coaches
  • Become actively involved with Hockey Victoria coaching networks
  • Remember, one coaching style does not suit everyone
  • Stand by the club philosophies
  • Understand the importance of player development

Governance

The Junior Development Coordinator should generally contribute to the development, definition and delivery of the following club activities and responsibilities:

  • Participate in the development of the annual hockey operations budget and corresponding business plan detailing the goals and objectives for each program
  • Establish a coaches discussion forum for Greensborough HC coaches where all coaches are committed to working together for the benefit of all players within the club
  • Ensure all coaches are supported with access to equipment and advice needed to enhance their ability to develop all players
  • Provide regular updates on progress showing number of:
  • accredited coaches
  • players involved with skills sessions
  • group leaders

Required Skills

Essential skills:

  • Thorough understanding of the game of hockey
  • Good understanding of the stages of coach development
  • Coach and/or mentoring experience
  • Assist with the establishment and meeting long and short range business objectives for the Club
  • Dedicated club person
  • Ability to provide calculated opinion in group discussions at committee meetings
  • Effective communicator
  • Be discreet and able to maintain confidentiality on relevant matters
  • Hold or willing to apply for a current volunteer “working with children” check

Desirable skills:

  • Current Level 2 Coaching Accreditation
  • Understanding of the current terminology used in hockey
  • Familiar with the use of small sided games as a learning tool
  • A detailed understanding of player pathways

Requirements

The Junior Development Coordinator is expected to:

  • Act in the best interest of the members at all times
  • Undertake the role in good faith and honesty

If at any stage the Junior Development Coordinator becomes aware of a personal conflict of interest, real or perceived between themselves and the club, they should immediately notify the President of the conflict who will immediately inform all other committee members.

Updating key documents

At the end of each year a key activity of the Junior Development Coordinator will review and revise their position description to ensure it continues to reflect the requirements of the role.  The updated Position Description must be provided to the Club Secretary prior to the Annual General Meeting each year.

Induction of the incoming Junior Development Coordinator

An important responsibility of outgoing Junior Development Coordinator is to train, mentor and support the incoming General Committee members.
