Program – under 10s

The Under 10s Program at the Greensborough Hockey Club is innovatively crafted to introduce young players to structured team play, skilfully balancing the dual objectives of skill enhancement and enjoyment within the sport of hockey. By emphasizing the acquisition of fundamental hockey skills, understanding positional play, team strategies, and a comprehensive grasp of game rules, this program seamlessly integrates competitive elements within a nurturing and pleasurable atmosphere. It is structured to prioritize the individual development of each player, where the emphasis is on learning and growth over the competitiveness of scores, fostering a conducive environment for personal and athletic development.

All competitions under this program are held at the Greensborough Hockey Centre, creating a localized and community-centric vibe. Games are adapted to a smaller scale, played on a quarter of the field with each team fielding five players, ensuring all participants are actively involved and contributing to the game. This structure not only fosters inclusivity but also encourages the development of versatile skills as players are required to engage in both offensive and defensive roles. The innovative introduction of three goals per team challenges traditional gameplay tactics such as goal-guarding, encouraging a more dynamic and holistic approach to the game where every player’s involvement is crucial.

Central to the ethos of the Under 10s Program is the principle that fun takes precedence over winning. This philosophy is designed to instil a deep-rooted love for hockey, ensuring that young athletes see their participation not just as a competition but as an enjoyable and enriching activity. Teams are carefully balanced to ensure equitable competition, allowing players to be challenged adequately while also celebrating successes, thereby enhancing their learning experience and boosting confidence.

Furthermore, in a distinctive approach to game management, coaches take on the role of umpires during matches. This dual role allows them to facilitate a game that is both enjoyable and educational, with a focus on preventing dangerous play and ensuring that significant rule infringements that lead to unfair advantages are minimized. The primary goal is to maintain a fluid and engaging game pace, providing constant opportunities for action and involvement.

This holistic and player-centred approach underpins the Greensborough Hockey Club’s philosophy of nurturing talent and sportsmanship. It reflects a commitment to creating an environment that is not only conducive to the athletic growth of its young participants but also to their enjoyment and love for the game of hockey. The Under 10s Program stands as a testament to the club’s innovative and inclusive approach to youth sports development, emphasizing that the journey of learning and enjoyment in sports is as important as the outcome.
