The Director Hockey Operations

The Role

The role of the Director Hockey Operations at Greensborough HC is to be responsible for the clubs hockey operations

  • oversee the daily hockey operations of the club
  • assist in maintaining a player database and ensuring membership fees are paid on time and monitor player ‘current teams’ status and ensure only eligible players are selected
  • club contact person for Hockey Victoria clearance, permits and appeals issues
  • ensure coaches are provided with support, training and advice as required
  • engagement and the review of the performance of the coaches (except Premier League)
  • utilise the experiences of current or past state players to promote current state thinking, strategies, and game plans
  • establish an overarching playing philosophy/style that can be adopted across all levels of the club
  • ensure specialist training is provided as it is needed
  • promote coaching accreditation
  • ensure there is a clear junior pathway to senior teams
  • identify talented players to be developed, promoted to higher grades
  • ensure Premier League goals align with club expectations regarding development and performance
  • review coaching and playing performance of the club and report any gaps to the Club Committee
  • management and coordination of junior player recruitment and development in conjunction with the Junior Coordinator

Player and team administration

  • Enter teams in their relevant competitions
  • Book venues for training and match day competitions
  • Ensure all players are registered and cleared to play in their nominated teams
  • Co-ordinate all player and coach clearances and transfers

Knowledge

To successfully undertake the role they should:

  • Be well informed of all club activities, especially those of all sub committees
  • Have a good working knowledge of the constitution, club rules and by laws, policies and procedures as well as the duties of all office holders
  • Have an understanding of the legal and compliance obligations of running the club
  • A good understanding of how to create and foster a positive work environment
  • In partnership with the Development Coordinator, take responsibility for player and coach development

Governance

The Director of Hockey Operations should generally contribute to the development, definition and delivery of the following club activities and responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver an annual budget and corresponding business plan detailing the goals and
    objectives for each program
  • Monitor club performance against budget
  • Prepare status reports for the committee
  • Evaluate program costs on an annual basis and provide the committee with written suggestions or
    business cases for improvement

Essential Skills

  • Establish and meet long and short range business objectives for the Club
  • Dedicated club person
  • Ability to provide calculated opinion in group discussions at committee meetings
  • Effective communicator
  • Be discreet and able to maintain confidentiality on relevant matters
  • Hold or willing to apply for a current volunteer “working with children” check

Requirements

The Director of Hockey Operations is expected to:

  • Act in the best interest of the members at all times
  • Attend all Committee members
  • Undertake the role in good faith and honesty

If at any stage the Director of Hockey Operations becomes aware of a personal conflict of interest, real or perceived between themselves and the club, they should immediately notify the President of the conflict who will immediately inform all other committee members.

Updating key documents

At the end of each year a key activity of the Director of Hockey Operations will review and revise their position description to ensure it continues to reflect the requirements of the role.  The updated Position Description must be provided to the Club Secretary prior to the Annual General Meeting each year.

Induction of the incoming Director of Hockey Operations

An important responsibility of outgoing General Committee member is to train, mentor and support the incoming General Committee members.
