Hookin2Hockey

Hookin2Hockey is a program designed for young boys and girls 10 years and under, to introduce them to the sport of hockey. The program focuses on teaching the basic skills of hockey, developing fundamental motor skills, and providing a fun and safe environment for children to learn and play. Hookin2Hockey is an official program of Hockey Australia, and it encourages children to make friends and begin their lifelong love for the sport.

Hookin2Hockey runs all year for children 4 to 5 years and others new to hockey or where they cannot attend every week. Older children joining the Hookin2Hockey program will have the opportunity to progress to the Stick2Hockey program as soon as they have learnt the basic skills.

Principles we follow!

Children’s sport should be fun and enjoyable. Children need a wide range of opportunities for unstructured play, a variety of activities, and the ability to express their creativity. Early sports specialization is not recommended for young children as it can limit their physical and mental development. The social aspects of sport are highly valued by children and the focus should be on skill development and individual improvement, rather than winning. It is important that all children receive time and attention, not just the most talented. Encouraging participation, effort, and teamwork is key for children to develop positive experiences in sports.

Why Hookin2Hockey

Hookin2Hockey gives children a fun environment in which to learn the game of hockey and the skills in a modified game-based environment.

To get started there are two rules of the game we will encourage but not enforce:

  1. No Feet: Technically the ball is not permitted to touch a player’s feet. However, in situations where the
ball hits a player’s feet but no advantage is gained then play-on can be called
  2. Flat side of the stick: Only the flat side of the stick can be used in hockey

Inclusive Coaching

Our coaches will adapt and modify their coaching methods to create an environment that caters to the individual needs of the children, allowing everyone to participate and experience success. By using the basic skills of good coaching, and applying an inclusive philosophy, all participants will be able to take part in the activity regardless of their abilities. This approach will ensure that everyone is included, and that everyone has the opportunity to learn and grow.

Benefits of Hookin2Hockey

Come and Try - 1 hour (free)

The Hookin2Hockey program is the first experience most children will have with hockey and it is designed to be an action-packed, fun-filled one-hour session that shows participants how exciting hockey can be through a variety of simple yet engaging games. The games are not limited by age, so children and adults alike can find enjoyment and challenge as they develop their ability to play the game, work as a team and make new friends through hockey. The use of games is crucial to the session, as it allows new participants to see all that hockey can offer and learn skills in a fun and enjoyable way through playing, rather than just through static drills.
